How to Start Your Own Body Wash Brand in the Philippines

Body wash is one of the fastest-growing personal care categories in the Philippines. Consumers are shifting from bar soap to liquid formats, and demand across moisturizing, whitening, antibacterial, and hotel amenity segments creates space for new brands at every price point.

This guide covers the complete process from formula choice to FDA notification and selling online and to hotels.

Why Body Wash Is a Strong Product to Brand in the Philippines

Body wash is a daily-use consumable with a short repurchase cycle. A loyal customer base generates consistent repeat orders because consumers run out of body wash every few weeks. For brands, that frequency means predictable revenue once a customer adopts your product.

The category supports strong differentiation. You can position around moisturizing, whitening, antibacterial, premium fragrance, natural ingredients, or hotel-grade quality. Each angle targets a different buyer at a different price point, and multiple body wash brands can succeed in the same market without competing directly.

Hotels, serviced apartments, Airbnb properties, and resorts buy body wash in bulk for guest amenities. This creates a B2B channel alongside retail that can be served from the same manufacturing batch in different package formats.

Types of Body Wash You Can Manufacture

Moisturizing body wash is the most widely purchased category and targets everyday use across all demographics. Whitening body wash targets skin tone improvement and commands a premium price. Antibacterial body wash is positioned for hygiene-focused households and families. Sulfate-free and natural body wash targets health-conscious consumers willing to pay more for cleaner ingredient lists. Hotel amenity body wash is a smaller-format product sold to accommodation businesses in 30ml to 50ml sizes.

Choose your positioning before finalizing your formula. The active ingredients, fragrance, packaging, and price point should all reflect the same story. A premium moisturizing body wash packaged in a generic white bottle with a plain label sends mixed signals to buyers and makes premium pricing harder to justify.

Step 1 Choose Your Body Wash Formula Type

Moisturizing formulas use ingredients like glycerin, shea butter, panthenol, and vitamin E to maintain skin hydration during and after washing. Antibacterial formulas include active agents like benzalkonium chloride. Whitening formulas incorporate glutathione, niacinamide, or kojic acid derivatives. Specialty formulas can combine benefits, such as antibacterial plus moisturizing for a family-use positioning.

For your first product, choose one formula type with a single clear benefit. A moisturizing body wash in a signature scent gives you a focused product to launch, reorder, and build brand recognition around. Expand to additional variants once you have sales data and customer feedback.

For hotel amenity-specific body wash, see Hotel Amenities Manufacturer Philippines for hotel packaging formats and volume requirements.

Step 2 Find an FDA-Licensed Manufacturer

Body wash is regulated as a cosmetic under Philippine FDA rules. All cosmetics manufactured in the Philippines must be produced at a facility holding a valid FDA Cosmetics License to Operate. The manufacturer holds this license for the facility. The brand owner does not need a manufacturing license but must notify the FDA separately for each product sold.

Never work with a manufacturer who cannot provide an active FDA LTO number. Products manufactured at unlicensed facilities cannot be legally sold in the Philippines and expose your brand to regulatory risk.

Orsolab holds FDA Cosmetics LTO No. LTO-3000006301418 and operates a GMP-certified facility in Tanza, Cavite, approximately 45 minutes from Metro Manila via CAVITEX. Minimum order is 250kg per SKU.

Step 3 Choose Private Label or Contract Manufacturing

Private label means your brand is applied to a formula the manufacturer already produces and has tested. Timeline is 6 to 10 weeks from order to delivery. No formulation development is required so the cost is lower. The trade-off is that the formula is not proprietary.

Contract manufacturing means the manufacturer develops a custom formula based on your brief. You own the formula. Timeline is 10 to 16 weeks including formulation, sampling, and approval cycles. The investment is higher but you get a product that cannot be replicated by another brand using the same private label base.

For most first-time body wash brands, private label is the practical entry point. It lets you validate demand before investing in custom development. Once you have reorder data and customer feedback, you can commission a custom formula for version two.

Step 4 Packaging and Labeling

Body wash is packaged in 200ml, 250ml, 400ml, and 1L bottles for retail and B2B channels. Pump dispensers, flip-top caps, and disc-top caps are all standard closures. For hotels and amenity programs, 30ml and 50ml pump or flip-top formats are standard. For institutional buyers and B2B refill accounts, 1L and 5L formats reduce per-use packaging cost.

Your label must include your brand name, product name, complete ingredient list in INCI format, net content, manufacturer name and address, country of origin, FDA notification number once approved, batch number, and manufacturing date. All these fields are mandatory under Philippine FDA cosmetics labeling regulations.

Step 5 FDA Notification

All cosmetics sold in the Philippines require FDA Product Notification before selling. Your manufacturer will assist with preparing the Product Information Document, safety assessment, and submission to the FDA.

FDA Product Notification typically takes 3 to 5 months. Production can start while the notification is in progress. You cannot sell legally until the notification certificate is issued, but you can manufacture and hold finished inventory while waiting.

For the full process, read FDA Registration Cosmetics Philippines.

Step 6 Sell Online and to Hotels

Shopee and Lazada are the primary online retail platforms for personal care brands in the Philippines. Both require FDA documentation to list cosmetic products. Once your Certificate of Product Notification is issued, upload it to each platform and activate your product listings.

Hotels, serviced apartments, and Airbnb hosts are strong B2B buyers of body wash. Hotel procurement teams purchase in bulk, typically 500 to 3,000 units per purchase order depending on property size. A body wash formatted for retail can be reformatted into 30ml to 50ml hotel amenity sizes to serve both channels from a single formula.

Realistic Costs and Timeline

Manufacturing cost for body wash ranges from ₱280 to ₱900 per kg depending on formula complexity and active ingredients. A basic moisturizing body wash costs less than a whitening formula with specialty actives like glutathione or niacinamide.

At 250ml per bottle, one kilogram produces approximately 4 units. At ₱500 per kg average, manufacturing cost is approximately ₱125 per 250ml bottle before packaging.

Pump or flip-top bottles in 250ml size cost approximately ₱12 to ₱25 per unit depending on bottle material and closure type. Labels cost ₱2 to ₱5 per unit. Total packaging per bottle runs approximately ₱14 to ₱30.

For a 250kg minimum order producing approximately 1,000 bottles at 250ml, total investment including manufacturing, packaging, FDA notification, and initial branding is approximately ₱150,000 to ₱200,000.

Private label timeline is 6 to 10 weeks from order to finished goods. Contract manufacturing is 10 to 16 weeks. FDA notification runs in parallel and takes 3 to 5 months.
